The lack of physical activity, the excessive weight of backpacks and bad posture habits caused in many cases by the lack of adjustment to school furniture, are some of the great enemies of children's backs. Back pain, ranging from annoying pain to scoliosis, is increasing and affects up to 70 percent of children today.

According to experts from the Kovacs Foundation, a third of schoolchildren carry a load greater than 10 percent of their weight, the recommended limit for adults. Therefore, it is not surprising that more and more children suffer from back pain, before the age of 15.

The weight of the school bag should not exceed 15 percent of the child's body weight. It must be adapted to the age and size of the child, so it is inadvisable to use the same backpack for several years. Failure to follow these warnings can lead to muscle problems or overload in children.

- Physical exercise. Among all preventive measures for back discomfort, physical activity during childhood is the most important from the point of view of experts. It is essential and necessary for the spine of children to acquire its proper and final shape. The practice of physical exercises prevents and reduces the risk of back pain.

- School furniture. Another factor to consider when it comes to the causes of children's back discomfort is poor posture due to inadequate school furniture. Experts recommend the use of height-adjustable chairs and desks that can be adjusted to the height of each child, thus favoring their posture. It is advisable for teachers to correct the students' posture, asking that they sit as far back as possible in the chair, that they keep their backs straight and their elbows supported.

- Feeding. Both breakfast and lunch and dinner should be factors that parents should monitor in their children's day-to-day life. Childhood overweight and obesity are agents that contribute to children's back discomfort, which makes prevention increasingly necessary. Children should avoid consuming sugars and saturated fats, including industrialized buns, "snacks" and sodas.

Ideally, they should bring a sandwich and fruit for the school snack. You cannot ignore what the experts say. They say that if a child suffers from back pain in adolescence, that increases the risk of suffering it chronically in adulthood.
